.:Three

Today I looked down at my badge.

…yes, the one with my name on it.

This picture is three years old.  Well, not this picture, but the picture in the picture.

June 2006 is when I began to work at Deloitte, as I was reminded by an anniversary e-mail reminder.

That face, smiling back at me, was me when I was 22.  I swipe that face up against the card reader every time I go into the office… I’ve been fortunate to not lose it as it serves as a reminder of who I was when I got out of college…

…I was a guy engaged to his college sweetheart, excited about living a life together with her.

Speaking of my college sweetheart wife, we went to go see Up.  As Nathan Fillion (Serenity) says “If your date doesn’t cry? Robot.”

…I can assure you that neither Sarah or I are indeed robots…

On the docket for lunch was a walk over to the post office to send off a couple items of import.  While those items of import are irrelevant to this story, they were in fact, important.  Nevertheless, I had recently purchased a few items from the Up soundtrack, notably “Married Life,” and “Stuff We Did.”  I recommend the former for a lighthearted romp into the melancholy, and the latter if you just feel like you need to weep openly as soon as you hit play… (it helps if you’ve seen the movie)

.:Through snow, sleet… or however that goes…
I arrived at the post office, and noticed that the three people behind the counters were the same three people that worked there back when I first began my own employment and would sell my books on Half.com to help pay for the upcoming wedding…

As I stood in line and sneezed uncontrollably for reasons unknown (if I’ve acquired allergies, it’s news to me… I still suspect the odd perfume of the woman in front of me…), I was thinking about these people that had probably been there for more than three years…

I began to wonder just how much more than 3 years each person had been there, and as fictional tales bounced around, I started to think on the idea of spending one’s life in one place… what that meant, what experience would be gained, and what would be missed.

It fit with the theme of Up.

.:Walkways and Heartstrings
So, I provided myself the ample soundtrack on the walk back.  Earbuds in, I made my way through a certain shortcut that leads into the building that’s connected to the one that’s connected to mine… it was also hot and I preferred the air conditioning…

There is a certain walkway that connects two of these buildings downtown where I first kissed my then-girlfriend/now-wife.

Stuff We Did,” is not an emotionally healthy song to have playing for that moment. (does this music remind you of anything else in recent memory?)

I recently celebrated my 2 year anniversary with Sarah.  I love my free-spirited, beautiful wife, I truly do… and if it weren’t time to go home to see her, I would post more, but the live thing is better than a blog post and reminiscing…
